K20 vs. K24: Honda K-Series Engine Buyer's Guide
Same Family, Different Personalities
The K-series is Honda's most swapped modern platform, and for good reason — it's compact, it's reliable when sourced correctly, and it scales from daily-driver torque to high-RPM track builds. The catch is that "K-series" covers a wide range of displacements and cylinder head designs, so "which K-swap" is really several different questions.
K20: Built to Rev
The K20, especially Type R variants, is built around high-revving output — smaller displacement, a head designed to make power up near redline. It's the go-to when the build priority is a responsive, high-RPM engine in a lightweight chassis.
K24: Built for Torque
The K24 trades some top-end excitement for meaningfully more low-and-mid-range torque, thanks to the larger 2.4L displacement. It's an increasingly popular choice specifically because it responds so well to a K20 head swap (the well-known "K24/K20 hybrid" or "Frankenstein" build), giving you K24 torque with K20-style breathing.
What to Check Before You Buy Either
- Head casting and block combination — confirm exactly what you're getting, not just "K24"
- Mileage and compression numbers from the actual unit
- Whether the engine includes the harness/ECU you'll need for your specific swap
