Why Mileage Claims Deserve a Second Look
"Low mileage" is one of the most common claims in JDM engine listings, and one of the easiest to write without backing it up. Before you buy based on a mileage number, it's worth knowing what actually supports that claim.
What Real Verification Looks Like
- Odometer photo from the donor vehicle at the time of the pull — not a stock photo, not a number typed into a listing.
- Auction sheet or export documentation, where available, showing the vehicle's condition and mileage at export from Japan.
- Compression test results consistent with the claimed mileage — a genuinely low-mileage engine should show even, healthy compression across all cylinders. If the numbers don't match the story, that's worth asking about.
Red Flags Worth Asking About
- A listing with no photo of the actual unit, only stock or generic images
- A round, suspiciously low number with no supporting documentation
- A seller who can't answer basic questions about the donor vehicle
