FA20 vs. FA20DIT: Subaru WRX Engine Buying Guide

1 min read

One Family, Two Very Different Engines

The FA20 name covers more ground than it sounds like. Subaru used the naturally aspirated FA20 in the BRZ/86 platform, and the direct-injected turbo version — the FA20DIT, commonly called FA20F — in the WRX. Confusing the two is one of the most common mistakes we see in swap inquiries.

FA20 (Naturally Aspirated)

Found in the BRZ/86/FR-S, this version is built around high-revving, balanced output rather than boost. It's a completely different tune and internals philosophy from its turbocharged cousin, and it is not a drop-in substitute for a WRX turbo motor.

FA20DIT / FA20F (Turbocharged)

This is the engine under the hood of the 2015+ WRX — a 2.0L direct-injected turbo flat-four. It's the one people mean when they say "WRX motor," and it's what we stock most of. Direct injection means fitment and tuning details matter more than on older port-injected Subaru engines, so VIN-based confirmation before purchase isn't optional here — it's the difference between a clean swap and a compatibility headache.

What We Check on Every Unit

  • Compression test results cylinder by cylinder
  • Confirmation of DIT vs. non-turbo variant before listing
  • Actual mileage from the pull, not an estimate
  • Real photos of the specific engine you'll receive
